Cue TV

Red is a play based on the abstract expressionist artist Mark Rothko. Indeed, the play captures Rothko's crisis between his complex attitudes towards art and the buyers' superficiality. Are they just "fuzzy rectangles", or Nietzsche-informed?
The director, Steven Stead, works with actors Michael and Jeremy Richards to put on a visually and intellectually stimulating play. There are moments of intensity, peppered with comic relief. Not surprisingly Red sold out at the National Arts Festival 2012.

The Runaway Train Cult is a side project of the Afrikaans roots music band; Radio Kalahari Orkes. A collaboration of some of South Africa's best musicians the band comprises Dan Roberts (2012 SAMA: Best Producer Winner), Christine Roberts, Wynand J Davel, Friso Woudstra and Brendan Ou Tim with compositions from Riaan Malan. Their sound is eclectic: consisting of Irish influenced murder ballads and suicide songs played in a merry and entertaining way. All of the instruments are acoustic, and the band celebrates unusual string instruments. A rare find at the fringe of the fringe.

Inter.Fear

Inter.Fear is dance that examines the physiological reactions of humans to their fear - logical or illogical. The piece uses a very minimalist set that makes use of juxtapositions between light and dark to convey a sense of being afraid. The dancers and choreographers of this work, Athena Mazarakis and Hansel Nezza, speak to cueTV about their choices around showing fear through movement and body language as well as how fear can take over your life if you let it.

Race in Comedy

Comedy pushes boundaries like no other platform. Race is no exception. Comedian, Siv Ngesi, has based his show, Race Card, around this. From the other side of the race tracks, Boet 'n Swaer (Brian Mullins and Alan Weyer) are a comedic duo who have fun pushing the race boundaries. The question remains: who has more license when it comes to using race in comedy? Is race in comedy going to make a difference to South Africa's racial ills? cueTV explores these funny questions.
